Wine Studies

What To Expect

Those interested in the study of wine can become an oenologist. An oenologist is the technical term for someone that has expertise in everything wine related. Oenologists learn about grape varieties, fermentation, temperature, and other aspects of wine production. Oenologists also learn the practical aspects of vine growing, grape harvesting, and winemaking techniques. After gaining a solid understanding of wine, oenologists work performing many tasks. Typical oenology tasks include deciding on when to harvest grapes, oversee the crushing/ pressing of grapes, monitoring the settling of juice, overseeing the fermentation, conducting lab tests, placing wine in tanks for maturation, and preparing plans for bottling wine. Oenologists may also conduct winery tours and manage sales, advertising, and marketing of the wine.

Recommended Qualifications

Although not a very well known profession, you can complete a degree in oenology at a select number of universities throughout the country. Those in oenology may also graduate with a degree in a related field such as plant physiology or microbiology.
