Small Business Management

A small business management professional is responsible for developing strategies to help a small business achieve its goals. Small businesses are those that are privately owned and operated. Small businesses also have a small number of employees, typically, fewer than 100.

Depending upon the type of management position held, a small business manager may be responsible for formulating policies, supervising cash flow, training personnel, and overseeing the work of employees. Regardless of the position held, those who are involved with small business management are also regularly called upon to generate reports and make certain the company's objectives are being met.

According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, management personnel who work their way up to top executive positions are among the highest paid workers in the United States. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the median annual salary for general and operations managers was $73,570 in 2008, while chief executives earned $82,090 that same year. In addition to their annual salaries, top executives are also regularly provided with stock options, performance bonuses, and perks such as gaining access to executive dining rooms and company cars and aircraft.

In order to obtain a small business management position with a company, you generally must earn a minimum of a bachelor's degree in management or business. Depending upon the industry in which you wish to work, you may also need to take coursework that is specific to a particular industry. If you wish to manage engineers, for example, taking engineering classes or earning an engineering degree with a minor in management may be necessary.

A good candidate for a small business management position is someone with good leadership skills and the ability to communicate clearly. Those who have an aptitude for business and who are interested in finding ways to help a business become as profitable as possible are particularly well suited to this career.
