Quality Control/Nondestructive technicians test and inspect products, without affecting, changing, or damaging the products being tested. Such products may include airplane parts, pipes, and electronics. Technicians work to improve reliability, efficiency, and expenses. Often they use x-rays, ultrasonics, and magnets. Tests must be documented and evaluated. From their tests, they then suggest ways to improve the product.

Income depends on education, experience, and area. According to NDT-ed.org, graduates with an Associates of Applied Science Degree in Nondestructive Testing Technology earned $25,000 to $45,000 and $41,000 to $53,000 by graduates with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.

In order to work in the quality control/nondestructive testing field, most employers require an associate's degree in NDT technology. These programs prepare students to become qualified and certified professionals.

Certification is required by many industries. Critical judgments are made on products that can have significant safety and financial consequences. There are three certification levels that correspond to various tests and procedures. With each test and level, there are mandatory training hours and work experience. After the required training and experience, certification examinations are completed. These exams are administered by The American Society for Nondestructive Testing.
