Permanent Makeup

A permanent makeup artist uses a tattoo machine, a pen machine or non-machine hand methods to apply ink to the faces of clients. This ink may be applied to the eyelids, eyebrows, lips, cheeks, or other areas in order to permanently create the look of makeup.

According to the Texas Institute of Permanent Cosmetics and Classic Beauty Concepts reports that permanent makeup artists typically earn anywhere from $50 to $300 per hour. The amount you can expect to earn as a permanent makeup artist, however, depends upon your level of expertise, the reputation you have acquired and the types of procedures that you provide.

In order to become a permanent makeup artist, you will need to complete a training program in the field. Although there are short, two-day training programs available, these programs do not provide the training that is necessary to successfully launch a career in this field. In fact, most permanent makeup artists follow the same course as traditional tattooists, which involves spending 1 or 2 years as an apprentice before working independently in the field.

A good candidate for a career as a permanent makeup artist is someone who has an eye for detail and who is interested in helping others look their best. Those who have a good concept of color and who understand how to use color to bring out facial features are particularly well suited to this career.
