Network Management

A network management professional designs and installs the computer systems that are utilized by a business or organization. This includes setting up local-area networks (LAN) as well as wide-area networks (WAN). A network management professional is also responsible for installing and providing ongoing support to Internet systems, intranet systems and network segments.

According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual income of network and computer systems administrators is $62,130. Those who work in the wired telecommunications carriers industry earn the most with a median annual income of $70,790. Those who worked for elementary and secondary schools earn the least with a median annual income of $53,750.

In order to become a network management professional, you must earn a minimum of an associate's degree. Most employers, however, require candidates to hold a bachelor's degree or hire. In some cases, those who do not have a degree but who have relevant computer experience may be employed in support positions, but the pay is significantly reduced for those without the relevant education.

A good candidate for a career in network management is someone who has strong analytical skills and an aptitude for troubleshooting. Those who have solid problem solving skills and who are effective communicators are particularly well suited to this career.
