A media production specialist designs and develops interactive media that may be used for a variety of purposes. Some industries that require the assistance of media production specialists include manufacturing facilities, broadcasting industries, educational institutions and government organizations. To assist with meeting the needs of these industries, media production specialists utilize graphics, audio, video, script writing, and other forms of media.

The employment opportunities available to media production specialists are quite varied. While some may choose to start their own businesses, others find employment as graphic artists. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, graphic designers earn a median annual salary of $45,000. Those who worked in specialized design services earned the most, with a median annual salary of $53,410. Those who worked in advertising and related serviced earned $47,000 while those who worked for newspaper publishers earned $31,540.

In order to become a media production specialist, you generally must earn a minimum of a bachelor's degree in graphic design or media production. It is important to note that there are typically some slight differences between the two courses of study. Whereas a graphic designer may use photographs in the designs that he or she creates, a media production specialist will actually take the photos as well.

A good candidate for a career as a media production specialist is someone who is creative yet tech-savvy enough to utilize the editing and production equipment that is involved with the job.
