Media Arts
A media arts specialist, who is also referred to as a graphic designer, develops and creates methods for communicating through print, film media and electronic forms of media. In order to convey the desired message, the media arts specialist must determine the best method for reaching the intended audience. Then, he or she uses photographs, illustrations, animations, color and type to develop the layout that will most effectively reach the target audience while sending the intended message.
According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, graphic designers earned a median annual salary of $43,540 in 2010. Those who worked for specialized design services earned the most, with a median annual salary of $45,870. Those who worked for newspaper publishers earned the least, with a median annual salary of $36,910. The American Institute of Graphic Arts reports that the median annual salary for entry-level designers is around $35,000.
In order to become a media arts specialist, you need to earn a minimum of an associate's degree in the field. Many employers, however, will only hire those who have earned a bachelor's degree or higher. Degree programs in media arts may be found at numerous universities and colleges as well as at private design schools.
A good candidate for a career in media arts is someone who is creative and has excellent communication skills. Those who have an aptitude for graphics software and who have solid problem solving skills are particularly well suited to this career.
