Mathematics

What To Expect

Mathematics experts, or mathematicians, utilize their knowledge about computational techniques, mathematical theory, and algorithms to solve problems for a variety of different industries that are related to mathematics. Some of these industries include science, economics, engineering, business, and physics.

Mathematics experts generally fall within two different categories. The first, theoretical mathematicians, work toward developing new mathematical principles by determining relationships between mathematical principles. Applied mathematicians solve practical problems with the mathematical principles that are already known and understood. Regardless of the area of specialty, most mathematicians work in a research and development capacity.

Recommended Qualifications

In order to become a mathematician, you generally must earn a minimum of a Ph.D. Some opportunities for mathematicians with bachelor's degrees do exist within the Federal Government, but most private industries require an advanced degree. In addition to becoming experts in mathematics, mathematicians also benefit from coursework in areas such as computer science, economics and life science.

A good candidate for a job in mathematics is someone who has a high aptitude for mathematics and strong analytical skills. Those with exceptional problem solving skills who enjoy working with numbers and algorithms are particularly well suited to this career.
