What To Expect

A person who pursues a language programs degree is generally interested in becoming an interpreter or a translator. While an interpreter converts a spoken language into another spoken language, a translator converts written words from one to the next. Although it is possible for a person with a degree from a language program to pursue a career in both areas, many choose to focus on only the written or the spoken conversion of words.

Recommended Qualifications

In order to become a translator or interpreter, you must complete a course of study through a language program. Although most people choose to specialize in one foreign language, it is possible to pursue a higher education in multiple languages. It is also beneficial to visit countries where the language is spoken and read novels that are written in the language in order to assist in one's growing fluency in the language and to become more familiar with the culture.

A good candidate for earning a degree through a language program is someone who is interested in foreign languages and cultures. Those who have excellent communication skills and are knowledgeable about language mechanics and vocabulary are particularly well suited to this career.
