IT Management

An IT management specialist utilizes computers and other forms of technology to help businesses and organizations operate more smoothly. In order to select and implement the proper technology, IT management specialists must understand the overall business plan and determine how technology can help achieve these goals. In addition, an IT management specialist must oversee network security initiatives as well as other forms of technology that are put into place.

According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual salary of IT management professionals was $101,580 in 2006. Those who worked in the computer systems and design services earned the most, with a median annual salary of $109,130. Those who worked for colleges, universities and professional schools, on the other hand, earned the least with a median annual salary of $83,280. The Robert Half Technology 2007 Salary Guide reports that Chief Technology Officers earned a range of $101,000-$157,750, while Information Technology Managers earned a range of $62,500-$88,250.

In order to become an IT management professional, you must earn a minimum of a bachelor's degree. Most employers, however, prefer hiring those with a graduate degree to fill these positions. Coursework includes a combination of accounting, business, and technical courses.

A good candidate for a career in IT management is someone who has strong leadership and computer skills. Those who have an interest in both business and technology are particularly well suited to this career, as are those who have a solid understanding of people and management processes.
