Interior Design

What To Expect

An interior design specialist utilizes furniture, color, lighting, texture, and space in order to enhance the appearance of a home or other building. While interior design specialists strive to meet the aesthetic needs of their clients, they must also consider the safety and function of the space when developing a design plan. Although interior design specialists are trained to work with a variety of different buildings, many choose to specialize in certain types of structures. Some common areas of specialization include restaurants, private residences, shopping malls, airport terminals, schools, and hotels.

Recommended Qualifications

In order to become an interior design specialist, it's recommended that you earn a bachelor's degree. Some colleges and universities do offer two- and three-year programs that lead to associate's degrees or certificates. After completion of one of these programs, you will generally be limited to assistant positions. Upon completion of a four-year program, on the other hand, you will qualify to enter an apprenticeship program. Most interior design graduates work as an apprentice for one to three years before taking a licensing exam.

A good candidate for a career as an interior design specialist is someone with a good eye for aesthetics. Those who enjoy making the most out of a space and have good communication skills are well suited to this career.
