What To Expect

HVAC and refrigeration technicians install and repair heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration units, although many technicians choose to specialize in only installation or only repair. In either case, HVAC and refrigeration technicians must be able to read blueprints, use tools, and implement their knowledge of this technology in order to make certain it is installed safely and in accordance with local, state, and federal guidelines.

Depending upon the type of system that is being installed, an HVAC and refrigeration technician may need to work alongside with other specialists. When installing an air conditioning unit, for example, the HVAC and refrigeration may require the expertise of an electrician as well as a pipe layer in order to complete the job properly.

Recommended Qualifications

In the past, those interested in becoming an HVAC and refrigeration technician had to complete an apprenticeship first. While completing an apprenticeship program is still a viable way to obtain the training necessary for the job, many are now choosing to get their training through trade schools, technical schools, junior colleges, and community colleges. Training is also available through the military. *Depending upon where you go for your training, it can take anywhere from 6 months to 2 years to complete the program. Based on the state where you plan to work, you may also need to successfully complete a test in order to obtain state licensure before you can start working.

A good candidate for becoming an HVAC and refrigeration technician is someone who has a mechanical aptitude and enjoys working with his or her hands.
