General Aviation
What To Expect
A general aviation professional is trained and certified to fly airplanes or helicopters. While the majority of general aviation professionals transport cargo or passengers, about 20% of them perform other tasks such as spreading seed for reforestation efforts or dusting crops.
In addition to actually flying aircraft, general aviation professionals are also responsible for checking over their aircraft in order to make sure they are operating properly. This includes checking the engines as well as the instruments, controls, and other systems. The general aviation expert must also check on weather conditions and then determine the route that will provide the fastest, safest, and most economical flight.
Recommended Qualifications
In order to become an airplane pilot, you must obtain a commercial pilot’s license. To become a helicopter pilot, you must get a commercial pilot's license with a helicopter rating. In order to obtain your license, you will need to complete a certain number of flying hours.
A good candidate for becoming a general aviation professional is anyone who has an interest in flying and who is able to make quick decisions under pressure. Since pilots are called upon to make accurate judgments and may potentially be placed in emergency situations, many airlines require their pilots to pass psychological testing as well as aptitude tests. In addition, you need to pass periodic eye examinations and other physical tests in order to maintain your licensure. Those with an interest in flying who are in good mental and physical health are particularly well suited to this career.
