What To Expect

A finance manager utilizes his or her skills and knowledge to oversee the preparation of financial reports, direct investment activities, and implement cash management strategies. Managers also develop strategies and long-term goals of their organization.

The specific duties of a person working in finance depends largely upon his or her job title. Controllers, for example, oversee the preparation of financial reports. Treasurers, on the other hand, typically direct the company's budget while credit managers oversee the amount of credit that the company issues.

Recommended Qualifications

In order to enjoy a career in finance, it is necessary to earn a minimum of a bachelor's degree in finance. Many employers, however, prefer to hire those with a master's degree. Obtaining special certification, such as the Chartered Financial Analyst designation from the CFA Institute is also beneficial.

A good candidate for a career in finance is someone who has solid interpersonal skills as well as a broad understanding of the world of business. Those who are creative and who have excellent problem solving skills are also well suited to this career, as are those with good computer and strong analytical skills.
