Film & Video
Film and video camera operators use video, television and motion picture cameras to produce images in order to document an event, entertain an audience or tell a story. Camera operators need to use their creativity and technical expertise to choose the best way to record images and to present them to an audience.
After filming images for a television show, movie or other broadcast, a film and video editor makes edits in order to obtain the desired outcome. Not only does this involve removing certain parts of the film and placing the scenes in the proper order, it may also include adding a soundtrack to the film. In some cases, a film and video camera operator does the editing as well.
In order to become a film and video camera operator or editor, you must take coursework in basic camera processes and techniques. These programs are offered at a number of community colleges, junior colleges, vocational schools, and technical schools. Bachelor's degree programs are also available at a number of colleges and universities, while film school is another option for those interested in pursuing a career in the field.
A good candidate for a career in film and video is someone who is creative and patient and also has an eye for detail. Good communication skills are also essential, as those working in the film and video industry are often called upon to work as part of a team. Those who are interested in bringing stories to life through film and who have a good eye and a talent for presentation are particularly well suited to this career.
