Electrology

An electrology specialist, who is also referred to as an electrologist, uses the process of electrolysis to remove hair from the body of his or her clients. Through this process, the electrology specialist inserts a very thin metal probe into each of the hair follicles where the hair is to be removed. Although this does not puncture the skin, it does allow electricity to be delivered to the follicle so the part that generates hair can be damaged. If performed properly, hair will no longer grow from the follicle that was treated.

The process of electrolysis should not be confused with laser hair removal, which involves removing the hair with a light-based method. Although laser hair removal can effectively remove hair, the Food and Drug Administration does not recognize it as a method for permanent hair removal.

The amount of money you can expect to earn as an electrology hair removal professional depends upon your experience, the geographic location of your employer, and the type of employer for which you work. Many electrology professionals work within a cosmetology setting and earn a median hourly wage of $10.25 in 2006 according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. The American Electrology Association, however, reports that many electroloy specialists choose to start their own businesses and earn anywhere from $25,000 to $50,000 per year.

To become an electrology specialist, you will need to complete a certification program that has been approved by the International Board of Electrologists Certification Board. After completing the necessary coursework, you will then need to successfully complete a licensing exam in order to become a Certified Professional Electrologist.

A good candidate for a career in electrology is someone who is interested in helping people improve their appearance through permanent hair removal. Those who have friendly personalities are particularly well suited to this career, as are those with an entrepreneurial spirit who might be interested in opening their own business.
