Electrical Technology

What To Expect

An electrical technology specialist assists with the research and development of electrical and electronic equipment. Also known as an electrical engineering technician, an electrical technology specialist utilizes the same principles of science, mathematics, and engineering as an engineer to design and manufacture equipment.

Electrical technology specialists typically learn the same theories and possess the same basic skills as engineers, but do not oversee the design and development of new technologies. Rather, they serve as part of a team that works under the supervision of a more experienced engineer who has achieved a higher level of education.

Recommended Qualifications

In order to become an electrical technology specialist, you must obtain an associate's degree in electrical engineering. These degrees can be earned through a variety of different colleges, universities, and online schools. After completing your degree, you may need to become certified through the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies in order to gain a competitive edge, though certification is not a state requirement.

A good candidate for working in the electrical technology field is anyone who is both creative and analytical at the same time. It is also good to possess solid communication skills, as electrical technology specialists are regularly called upon to work with other engineering technicians and engineers. People who enjoy mathematics, science, and problem solving are particularly well suited to a career in electrical technology.
