What To Expect

In culinary arts you’ll work as a chef or cook preparing gourmet meals. You’ll trim and prepare meats, fish, and poultry. You’ll use your skills in culinary arts to make soups, salads, entrees, sauces, side dishes, pastries, deserts, and other complex dishes. Your culinary arts duties will also involve inspecting meals for quality and presentation. Your career in culinary arts can encompass a variety of tasks, ranging from short order cook to head chef.

Recommended Qualifications

To receive the proper culinary arts education it is important to attend a cooking school or a fine culinary arts school. There are also culinary arts programs available at some vocational colleges and trade schools accredited by The American Culinary Federation. Culinary arts programs can teach specialized cooking techniques in French, Italian or another style of world cuisine. Some culinary arts school programs focus on a particular type of food such as pastry baking. Once you’ve completed your culinary arts program you can apply for certification as a chef, cook, pastry professional or other culinary arts field through the American Culinary Federation.
