As a school counselor you would help high school students deal with the adolescent and social stresses including school, college preparation, and job selection. In family counseling you’ll help families prevent or repair relationship fractures. Your counseling can also help those trying to overcome addictions and abuse of substances, food, sex, or physical/emotional abuse.

You can earn your counseling degree or certification at an accredited community college or a 4-year university. Depending on the type of counseling degree you choose, you can complete your program in two to eight years. Your counseling program courses may include: interpersonal and group communications, psychology, pharmacology, sociology, criminal justice, social structures, and family studies. Upon completing your counseling degree you will be eligible to receive the proper licensing to practice counseling in your state.

Now is a good time for your choice to go into counseling. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts the demand for counseling to grow 21% over the next few years. You can earn $36,000 to $75,000 by working in counseling positions at public or private schools, school districts, and local and federal government agencies. You can also work in a private counseling practice at psychiatric and psychology clinics, research centers, family planning, counseling agencies, rehabilitation services, in-patient and out-patient care centers, medical clinics and private or public hospitals.
