Broadcasting

Generally requiring a bachelor’s degree in journalism, broadcasting, or mass communication, broadcasting is a highly competitive field. Radio and television stations often broadcast live news and recorded programs that are transmitted via satellite. Programming can include local or national news as well as talk shows or entertainment programs.

It is common for entry-level workers to start in a smaller area and move to a larger metropolitan area as their career advances. Obtaining hands-on experience during college is helpful in landing a job. Most work at their universities radio or television station where they are able to put the skills they are gaining into practice and have “on air” time to display when applying for a full time job after graduation.

Radio and television stations charge advertisers for airing their messages and the rates they can get for the advertising depends on the ratings of the programming on the station. This provides for a very competitive field, even in local news stations. According to the Bureau of Labor statistics, 73% of industry workers are in television or radio and lists the average wage for reporters or broadcasters at $18.27 per hour. Opportunities in the field of broadcasting consist of program production, news broadcasting, technical operations, sales and management.
