Biomedical Informatics

This discipline is the science relating to biomedical structure, acquisition and use in the areas of research, education, and health and clinical sciences. Closely related to computer science or information sciences, this field combines the medical science with technology to communicate models and applied systems. The goal is to understand the reasoning behind research accomplishments, represent the data in structures that clearly define the relationship between the concepts and terms, and develop computer systems aligned with clinical medical practices and research. Those in biomedical informatics evaluate work flow and communication between researchers and technology and provide retrieval methods utilizing technology.

This is an emerging field that typically requires advanced degrees where studies include math, statistics and computer technology. Coursework includes computer science, biophysics, biochemistry, and genomics. The goal in this field is to communicate the new medical information or discoveries and organize the processes to benefit patients. Careers in the field include: project managers and designers, programmers, researches, information officers, system analysts and educators. Those in biomedical informatics typically work in hospitals, universities, government programs, or pharmaceutical manufacturers. This specialized field provides many opportunities and competitive pay due to the specific and demanding nature of the education required to work in the industry.
