Biology
Biology is the study and research living organisms to understand their bodily processes and how that relates to the environment. Those going into biology often specialize in zoology or microbiology. Commonly working in government or university laboratories or private labs, biologists typically work independently on the research itself. Communicating the results requires strong verbal skills and sometimes the ability to explain things in layman’s terms.
Scientists complete research in laboratories relying on equipment to interpret results. The ultimate goal of biological research is to improve the human condition by developing solutions to deal with disease. Information learned is used to develop new drugs or treatments or improve diagnostic tests. In the business environment there is pressure to move research quickly to allow for marketing a product and making money.
A Bachelor’s degree is required in this scientific endeavor and often advance degrees are encouraged. Many study biology as undergraduates before pursuing a career in medicine. Those working in basic research without advanced degrees can expect to start by earning $31,258 per year.*
