Auto Body Technology

What To Expect

After an accident an Auto Body Technician can remove dents or replace damaged body parts with new ones and repaint the vehicle to look like new. Every project is different and these workers must be good at problem solving to determine the best techniques. The work done largely depends on the type of vehicle and construction of the body. The end goal is not just to have the car or truck look like it did pre-accident, but it must be restored to the exact specifications for proper operation.

Technicians use tools and hydraulic equipment to adjust and align the frame using a variety of methods including: pneumatic metal-cutting guns to remove parts, hydraulic jacks, or pick hammers. Before painting, a "media blaster" can be used to prep the surface. Many newer vehicles are constructed of plastic parts and built-in panels that can be removed and replaced. Sometimes these panels are fixed with a tool applying heat.

Large auto body shops usually have technicians who specialize in one area or another and they may all work together to completely fix one car. Technicians specializing in glass replacement or repair handle the window and windshield replacement post-accident. They utilize a mixture and rubber strips to weather proof the glass. Automotive painters complete the finish work that seamlessly blends the new or adjusted parts with the body parts not affected by the crash.

Recommended Qualifications

Sometimes on-the-job training is available to those working in this industry, however, a certificate from a community college or vocational school is preferred. These programs can vary in length from 6 months to 2 years and hands-on-training is a large component. Sometimes high schools even offer similar programs to prepare students to enter the industry. M
