Audio Technology

Audio technicians are responsible for operating equipment to record or broadcast sound for presentations, concerts, sports events, or film productions. They use microphones and speakers wired with cables to mixing boards and recording equipment. In some venues they are also required to operate lighting for live productions from a control room.

Some specialize in producing music and work with recording artists in a studio to record and edit sound. There are specialized Bachelor’s Degree programs for the music industry where technicians are taught to set up, trouble-shoot and utilize recording equipment. Technicians must learn to make adjustments based on sound quality for live productions as well as editing and mixing sound for recordings.

This creative profession provides an entry level salary around $32,000 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Technicians are needed outside the music industry in the following areas: motion picture industry, radio and television broadcasting, commercial equipment manufacturing, and leasing, performing arts venues and sports arenas. There are no regular hours for most jobs in this area because recordings and events can happen any time of the day or night. Studios desire the most efficient use of the expensive equipment and often charge by the hour around the clock for studio recording sessions.
