Architecture

Architects design buildings ranging from individual houses to public structures. They also design other buildings including schools, churches, restaurants, and offices. An architect is the one that takes what a client needs and draws it into plan, taking into account all aspects of the site. High tech computer aided drafting software has replaced the former methods of pen and paper blueprints.

Architects plan every factor from how a structure will impact the land, to how the foundation is placed as well as the placement of beams, windows, doors, electrical spaces, plumbing, air conditioning, furnace ducts, and much more. Architects are often in an office setting working a regular 40-hour week. Throughout the building process, they are also required to be at building sites to ensure progress is being done correctly.

A bachelor’s or master's degree is required to become an architect. Coursework includes: design, math, science, environmental factors, and history of architecture as well as city planning and zoning. Once education is completed, they must pass a licensing exam to obtain a licensure before they can begin working. After they have their license, they must continue to get education throughout their career to remain current in the field. According the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics the median pay ranges from $49,000 - $83,000 annually.
